The war on terror is and is not a puzzle as has been described in this class. It is in the sense that the war is won when there is no more terrorism, however how can you tell when there is no more terrorism? The war on terror has goals of eradicating terrorism around the world, but the war on terror has only targeted a small portion of the world that is a cause for terrorism (the whole world causes it). People may see the war on terror being won when there is a stable democratic government in Iraq, but until terrorism is gotten rid of around the world then technically the war is not won. Whether or not the war on terror is a puzzle as has been discussed on this class, it really depends on what you see the goal as.

I think that Geographical knowledge in an internet dominated world is important, but not necessary.
1. Directions and maps can be easily obtained via the internet at anytime to virtually any place as there are many readily available applications for this sort of thing. However, to know where something is and how to get there makes the whole process easier rather than reading a map which may not be as easy as it seems.
2. To lead an active life now, one can simply use GPS to find directions. However, to give an asking stranger directions you are unlikely to hand them your GPS device and maybe unable to give them simple directions that could be obtained if you had some simple first hand knowledge.
3. Geographical information is so easily obtainable that other than very simple knowledge of how to get from home to work etc. is not crucial to know. However, it does not speak wonders for your intelligence when you cannot point out a country on the map that you have been at war with for the past 8 years. If people have geographical knowledge it makes for a smarter population, but unfortunately the population can get by without it, which produces the poor results seen in the survey taken previously in this class.

I Pledge

I believe in finding an effective way to stop childhood and teenage depression. Depression can escalate at an uncontrollable rate and destroy lives and the possibilities available for young people. Depression is a serious illness that is often neglected and not only can it destroy the life of the person directly affected, it can destroy the lives of the immediate family. Depression can lead to high blood pressure, irregular heart rhythms, arterial damage and a weakened immune system. Depression often leads to suicide and in many cases we are to late to act on it before this happens because the signs are so hard to read. There are many types of depression, Clinical depression shows itself by the complete inability to enjoy life or take part in everyday activities, the victim completely shuts down until they are left with nothing but their self loathing thoughts. Dysthymia is a recurrent milder form of depression where more often than not you feel moderately depressed until the point when you can't remember a time when you were not depressed. Perhaps the most common in teenagers is Manic depression more commonly known as bipolar disorder. This type of depression includes mood swings where a victim can feel extremely happy for up to about two weeks, and then they swing back to being clinically depressed. Manic depression is a leading reason that it is so hard to point out who has depression because half the time we see these people they are extraordinarily happy. I believe in finding a way to stop this because I've seen someone suffer through it, continue to suffer through it, and not only their life suffer, but the lives of their parents. I pledge to first find an effective solution for them, and then share that solution with those also suffering. This is a serious problem throughout the world and without offering a helping hand it will only get worse and destroy more lives. One of the worst things you can do when you think someone is depressed is to leave them alone and hope that they will get over it soon, loneliness is a major factor in causing depression so we need to get out there and help in anyway we can, even if it is only spending half an hour a day talking to someone about something they like. Whatever we can do to make a difference we need to do. Sometimes you would never guess that an individual is depressed, when you've been through it, it's a lot easier to see.

Reactions

Student - I have a relative who's going through the same thing and it's definitely not good to be around someone who's going through that.
Adult - It's true. You never know, sometimes the kids who look the happiest are really depressed and not functioning on the inside.
