The Personal Essay

  • Personal Essay: Focused on a belief or insight about life that is important to you
  • Personal Narrative: Focused on a significant event
  • Personal Memoir: Focused on a significant relationship with a person, place or object

A personal essay might combine elements of a narrative and memoir (events, and relationships are important and may help us define what we believe).

We can answer these questions:
  • What is the most important point?
  • What led the author to believe this?
